Energy Recovery from Urban Solid Wastes – a Case Study

چکیده
Energy recovery from Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) generated in New Delhi is studied. The two options available viz., recovery of Biogas and energy due to the firing of MSW as fuel are reviewed. Continuous recovery of energy from the city’s MSW through Biogas needs a lot of planning with respect to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of landfills. The yield of Biogas with respect to the age of landfills is often a limitation for planning purposes. Electric power Generation (EPG) by firing MSW as fuel in the boiler-steam-turbine system is considered. The expected EPG from the city’s MSW is composed using the calorific value is calculated from its composition and the one reported in literature. The results show that, the EPG is directly proportional to the calorific value of MSW fired, following an empirical relation. For encouraging results, it is suggested that, the combustible organic wastes be segregated from the MSW stream.

Potential for energy recovery from municipal plastic wastes generated in Nigeria
Management of municipal solid wastes (MSW) in most developed societies now involves the use of thermo-chemical conversion methods. This leads to energy and material recovery while also protecting the environment. However, till date most of the wastes generated in Nigeria (including plastic wastes) are either land-filled or openly burnt. These methods are not sustainable and environmentally non-...

This report presents the results of a study that examined alternatives to landfilling the municipal solid wastes (MSW) of New York City. Detailed characterization of the wastes led to their classification, according to materials properties and inherent value, to “recyclable”, compostable”, “combustible”, and “landfillable”. The results showed that the present rates of recycling (16.6%) and comb...

Thousands of tons of urban solid waste and human and animal waste in cities and villages of Iran have endangered the health of the environment and increased the greenhouse gases. On the other hand, the increasing trend of energy consumption has caused energy crisis phenomena in the world. Moreover, the increasing consumption of energy from fossil fuels has caused emissions from these fuels. Hen...
متن کاملValorization of municipal solid wastes through biogas production in Iran
Iran is a developing country with a population of over 80 million. The total daily MSWs production in Iran is about 50 million kg. Most of the MSWs in this country is being disposed of in the landfills. Some of the landfills are located in the urban area or near to sea, river, and forest. In this regard, the management of MSWS becomes a concern in Iran. One solution to manage MSWs and mitigate ...
